February 2010 Already

Wow its February 2010 already were did it go. I know not a lot of updates on the site and the last ones were just email in posts. But I hope to post more now, January was a busy month for service calls and just work. Along with one cold after the other I’m finale getting over this one after having to get some meds.

So good news we got half of our taxes back so I ordered my podcasting kit so expect a podcast to be coming soon. I also am getting a Google Nexus One phone, should be here in the morning, overnight shipping on the weekend is a none event. I’ve been excited to get this phone, so I well be posting about it a lot, and I well not do a unbox or video of it I well post a few embedded links when I talk about it though.

And finale I well be starting Online classes in the middle of March for Network Administration so that should be fun, I well be on the computer more so more updates likely. 😀

Intel has just concluded its first CES press event of 2010, dedicated to “announcing” the already well known Arrandale and Clarkdale CPUs. They will be part of Intel’s planned 27 total SKUs coming in 2010, including four varieties of Core i3, eight Core i5s, and five Core i7 models. We were treated to a demo showing off a Core i5 laptop CPU running a 1080p video with another video stream overlaid on top of it with a measly 10% CPU usage.

The new Philips / Funai combo P&F is promising a sweet look on the face of being green with its stylish Eco TV series. Check the press releases after the break, but the 4000, 5000 and ultimately 7000 series climb the ladder predictably in sizes and price. Key in 2010 is the introduction of Netflix streaming, internet radio and Blockbuster Video On Demand on some models and even HDMI 1.4 jacks on the top of the line 7000 models. Another bonus over the big boys? Actual prices and ship dates have been revealed. Check after the break for another shot of the 7000 and every detail you could ever ask for.

New Laptop – Gateway NV7802u

Well I had to get a new laptop after 5 or so years of use out of my old one. The past year or so my old laptop was giving me problems starting, it had to do with the startup power and is un-fixable unless you send it in and the companies doesn’t even know what laptop it was. It was kind of a generic system so nothing special. I was planning on getting one in from my wholesale suppler for Grand Junction Computers, but the exact one from Lenovo won’t be in stock for a few more weeks, and I was planning on getting it a week ago. So Saturday we went to look at what the big box stores had and found a nice system from Gateway.

Gateway NV7802uThe Gateway NV7802u

  • Intel® Coreâ„¢2 Duo T6600 Processor (2.2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache)
  • Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • 4096MB Dual-Channel DDR3 1066MHz sDRAM9
  • 500GB SATA hard drive
  • Sleek Honeycomb Case Design with Glossy NightSky Black Lid
  • 17.3″ HD Widescreen Ultrabrightâ„¢ LED-backlit Display (1600 x 900 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio)

Well I have gotten off the vary few pre-installed crap ware things (60 day Norton Trial, 60 day Office Trial) who wants only 60 days of something lame just give me a year or nothing or Office should be a simple version with just Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, maybe Onenote. But with not much pre-installed this system works good. The screen is HUGE and good looking, also the HDMI out is sweet never know when I’ll need that. The keyboard feels good, much better then the Dell I was looking at that was $150 more for the same processor, memory, and hard drive. From the reviews I read that there is room for another SATA hard drive so that’s cool, if I could find an internal bluetooth module that would be nice, but not going to get used much until I get my new phone and well tether it when I’m out of the house. The WI-FI is fast and gets good signal around my apartment. Another good thing is it quiet so I could use it for recording my upcoming podcast in another room for it to sound good. Having it running web pages and a few little program installs for about an hour it is cool to the touch all over so that is good for when its on my lap, reviews on Gateways website also talk of how cool it runs.

The system runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, so I’m happy to be able to try out 64-bit stuff. It also can take full advantage of the 4GB of ram unlike my desktop with 4GB ram that is overdue for a from scratch rebuild. The 2.2Ghz duo-core CPU is nice I hope it well make arriving my DVD’s with Handbrake faster. The big screen is still strange to me since there is room for 2 windows side by side to run and work with easy.

Any ways, I like the system and for the $599 price tag it well be easy to pay off. Now all I need is a USP to Serial cable for my DSL work so I can consol into Cisco equipment 😀
